The hole inside me was so big, a football could fit within and it took 2 surgeons to hold it open while I silently cried on the operating room table. The metallic taste of the medication hit the back of my throat and I closed my eyes to the sound of the saw and everything went black.
It was the pain that woke me up. Red, hot, searing through my body like I'd been gutted from the inside out. Standing next to me was a hospital administrator and she was explaining to my mom that my insurance wouldn't cover that 22nd operation and that we needed to pay at least $65,000 to continue treating me. If it wasn't enough that my body was convulsing from the pain, now I knew that I was screwed because my parents were on the brink of bankruptcy already and I felt like the world was going to end. How could I help them with my $107 per week disability check? I couldn’t even stand for more than 2 mins, so how the hell was I going to pay for that?
Breaking through the pain like spears were thoughts like:
- We’re going to be homeless
- I’ll be the cause of my family going through with bankruptcy
- We’ll lose the house
- I’ll lose my only source of income, no matter how small
- My family will hate me
- They must already hate me
- I’m worthless
- I should just give up
- There’s no way out of this
The nurse walked in and medicated me out of my misery, and I was at peace for 2 hours.
